Actor turned politician and Tiruvadanai MLA Karunas was arrested this morning for his provocative, defamatory and derogatory remarks against Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami and police officials.

A Special team of police officials arrested Karunas at his Valasaravakkam residence at around 6.30 am, even as a large number of supporters gathered in front of his house since last night after his arrest became imminent. He was taken to Nungambakkam police station for questioning After which he was produced before 13th Egmore Metropolitan Magistrate Gopinath at his residence. He was remanded in judicial custody till 5 October and later lodged in prison.

Talking to reporters after his arrest, Karunas said the AIADMK government was suppressing the freedom of expression and that he would fight the case legally. He also said the permission of Legislative Assembly Speaker P Dhanapal should be obtained for arresting a MLA.

‘I don’t know whether police have obtained the permission of the Speaker for arresting me’, he added.
