The Tamil film industry today observed a day-long token fast, in which the creme of Kollywood participated, to protest against the Central government's move to impose service tax.
All the leading lights of the Tamil film world, including Rajnikanth, the past and present actors, including Surya, Karthi, Vijay, took part in the fast held in front of the Valluvar Kottam.
The film industry contended that the 12.36 per cent service tax imposed by the Centre would hurt the film and television industry. Almost all speakers had a dig at the Centre for imposing service tax and wanted it to be abolished. Speaking on the occasion, Rajnikanth said the Union Government should accept the demand of the film industry and abolish the service tax.
He said imposition of service tax would lead to more black money and the government itself was well aware of it. Making a fervent plea for abolishing it, Rajnikanth said the Centre could bring in separate laws to deal with those evading tax payment.
