V N Chidambaram (76), owner of Kamala Cinemas in Vadapalani in Chennai passed away in Madurai due to ill-health at a private hospital this morning. He is survived by three sons. Chidambaram was married to Kamala and hence named the theatre after her.
The theatre is a important landmark in the Kollywood capital of Tamil cinema.
A close associate of many film personalities, he shared an excellent rapport with thespian Sivaji Ganesan. A former Thakkar of Madurai Meenakshi Amman temple, he contributed amlot for the welfare of the Tamil film industry.
He will be cremated at his native village Rangiyam in Pudukottai district tomorrow.
