The annual IX Chennai International Film Festival was inaugurated in a grand manner on Wednesday. State Minister Rajendra Balaji, acclaimed filmmaker Shekhar Kapur and who's who of Tamil film industry took part.
Speaking on the occasion, Shekhar Kapur said, ' Tamil films are closer to reality than Bollywood films. It has everything to entertain masses the real way'.
The film festival witnesses over 150 films from 44 countries screened during the event.
The Tamilnadu government has granted Rs 25 lakh for the event in which a competition for Tamil films are being organized separately. The event kicked up controversy when Tamil Film Directors Association chose the event stating that films like Thenmerkku Paruvakattru and Sengadal were not considered for screening at the competition section for Tamil films.
