The Tamil Nadu Theatre Owners’ Association has filed a cheating case against Sun Pictures and its chief operating officer Hansraj Saxena involving Rajinikanth-starrer Enthiran, produced by Sun Pictures and released last year.
The Association said Sun Pictures owed it Rs 1.5 crore but had gone over its head and released the film directly in theatres, reports said. Enthiran starring Rajinikanth and Aishwarya Rai was produced in a grand manner by Sun Pictures. It was released across the globe on 1 October, 2010.
Stating that they had suffered huge losses screening the movie, the theatre owners sought police intervention in getting their deposits back from Sun Pictures. They reportedly registered cases against Sun Pictures, Gemini (which distributed the film) and Saxena's assistant Ayyappan.
Owned by the listed entity Sun TV, Sun Pictures has until now distributed 18 movies and produced and distributed one movie. The only movie produced and distributed by Sun Pictures, Rajinikanth's Enthiran, had revenues of Rs 179 crore in 2010-11. In percentage terms, Sun Pictures contributed 11.5 per cent of Sun TV's FY 10-11 revenues.
